Islamabad International Airport

After Pakistan's independence, a portion of the Chaklala air base was allocated to provide travel facilities for residents of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and the surrounding Pottohar area. However, as the number of domestic and international travelers increased over time, the small terminal at the airbase, later named Benazir Bhutto International Airport, proved insufficient to meet the growing demand.

Recognizing the need for a modern and expanded airport facility, the foundation stone of the Islamabad International Airport (ICAO code: OPIS) was laid on 7th April 2007 by former Pakistani Prime Minister Mr. Shaukat Aziz. The new airport was designed to cater to the increasing number of passengers, both domestic and international, and to enhance Pakistan's connectivity with the rest of the world.

After years of planning and construction, the Islamabad International Airport was officially inaugurated on 20th April 2018. Located approximately 20 kilometers west of Islamabad city center, the new airport boasts modern amenities, state-of-the-art facilities, and expanded capacity to handle the growing air traffic in the region.

With its strategic location and upgraded infrastructure, the Islamabad International Airport has become a vital gateway for travelers entering and leaving Pakistan. It serves as a hub for both domestic and international flights, facilitating business, tourism, and diplomatic exchanges with countries around the globe.
