Karatal-Zhapyryk reserve was organized in 1994 in the Naryn region in order to preserve unique natural resources, as well as rare species of animals and plants. According to the classification of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the reserve is assigned category I - strict nature reserve.
Currently, the reserve is located on an area of ​​21,016 hectares and includes 3 protected areas. In order to keep a record of animals, several routes have been laid on the territory of the reserve and there are two high-mountain lakes. It should be noted that a large number of medicinal plants grow in the reserve. The fauna is represented by a rich variety of different species of birds, mammals, insects, fish, and reptiles. Some representatives of the flora and fauna of the reserve are included in the Red Book.
The territory also has historical stone monuments on the Son-Kul lake, burial grounds around the Son-Kul lake, a burial ground - a parade ground with drawings on stones on the Mai-Kungoy section and natural monuments - a waterfall on the Kazhyrty and Karatal rivers, It-Olgon and Bordu canyons, caves Kan-Salyk and Mykaachy-Unkur, which are accessible to tourists.
