Merv is one of the oldest and historically richest cities in Central Asia, located in present-day Turkmenistan. It was founded in the 3rd century BC and became one of the largest and most important cities on the trade routes of the Great Silk Road. Merv has been an important center of culture, science, crafts and religion for many centuries.

At different times in its history, Merv was ruled by various empires, including the Parthian, Sassanid, Arab, Seljuk and Mongol empires. Each of these empires left their mark on the city, making its history rich and varied.

It is especially important to note that Merv became one of the centers of the Islamic world in the IX-XII centuries, when the city was the capital of the Seljuk dynasty. During this period, many majestic mosques, madrassas, palaces and caravanserais were built here.

Today, Merv is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Excavations in Merv allow scholars and historians to understand many aspects of the life and culture of ancient civilizations in Central Asia. The city is a unique blend of architectural styles and cultural traditions, making it one of the most interesting places to study the history of this region
