Bokonbaevo is the largest settlement in the south of Lake Issyk-Kul. This place is not only famous for its beauty, but it is an eco-tourism center. The village is located 160 km from Karakol and 280 km from Bishkek, in the south of Lake Issyk-Kul. Tourists come here to learn about the nomadic life of Kyrgyz people, to feel the fresh mountain air and enjoy the splendor of Lake Issyk-Kul.
Residents of the village are engaged in agriculture and trade. Once a year, a falconry festival called “Salburun” is performing here. Hunters are competing with each other, hunting small and large fowl, with the help of golden eagles, falcons, dogs and bow. Horse Racing is also included in the competition.
Before Russians the village was called Kok Kytan. In 1912, Russias gave the name Koltsovka. Name Bokonbaevo the village got in 1944, in honor of the Kyrgyz poet and playwright Joomart Bokonbaev.
